The 50 KB ceiling turns up on exam and recruitment portals, usually beside a slot that also wants a photograph and a signature. A one-page text document or a clean black and white scan clears it easily. A colour scan of the same page is five times too big before you start, and the honest options are to rescan it or to send fewer pages.

A cap this tight almost always dates from a time when the portal expected one scanned page and nothing else. It is rarely revisited, and arguing with it gets nowhere. What works is giving the tool a cheaper starting file, which the section below covers.

Unused objects, thumbnails and stale metadata go first, which costs nothing at all. Then the pictures inside the file are recompressed in place, starting at 200 ppi, while your text, links and form fields are left exactly as they were.

If the images were not where the weight was, the pages are rebuilt as pictures with an invisible text layer behind them, so the words stay searchable. It probes at 150 dpi, works out the resolution that should fit, and will not go below 60 dpi.

What fits in 50 KB, and what does not

The honest answer depends on page count and on what is on the pages. Text pages are cheap because a rendered page of black text compresses extremely well as a JPEG. Colour scans and photographs are expensive because every pixel carries information the encoder has to keep. The estimator uses typical figures to show which attempt your file is likely to land on.

Estimates before any quality is traded away. Anything past the line has to go down the image ladder, and the largest usually need the pages rebuilt as pictures.

When it cannot reach 50 KB

Some documents will not fit legibly, and the tool says so rather than pretending. When the result line reports a miss, three moves usually solve it:

  • Split first. Use Split PDF to break the file into parts and compress each. Most portals accept several attachments even when each one is capped at 50 KB.
  • Rescan the source. A fresh 150 dpi greyscale scan compresses far better than a colour scan that has already been through one compressor. Every pass costs quality, and the first pass should start from the cleanest source.
  • Check the real limit. Portals sometimes state one number and accept another. Read the fine print, or try a slightly larger file before compressing harder than you need to.

Compressing an already-compressed file compounds the quality loss without much further saving. If the first result is not right, run the original again rather than the output. And keep the original: the compressed copy is for the portal, not for your records.

When 50 KB means an image, not a PDF

Before compressing anything, read the slot label again. A large share of 50 KB requirements are attached to a photograph or a signature specimen, and those slots want a JPEG or a PNG. Wrapping a small image inside a PDF adds several kilobytes of container around it, which at this size is a meaningful share of the budget, and many portals reject the file for the wrong format anyway.

  • Photo slots. Usually 20 to 50 KB as a JPEG, at a pixel size the portal states. Export from any photo app at that size rather than building a PDF.
  • Signature slots. Usually 10 to 20 KB. Sign on white paper, photograph it, crop tight to the ink and save as a black and white JPEG.
  • Document slots. These do want a PDF, and this is the tool for them.

When it genuinely is a document, the single most effective move is scanning in black and white rather than greyscale or colour. A bitonal page at 200 dpi lands around 35 KB and stays crisp, because there is only ink and paper to record. The same page in greyscale is three times the size and no easier to read.

Why this runs in your browser

01Can a PDF really fit in 50 KB?

A page of text or a black and white scan, yes, comfortably. A colour scan of a single page starts around 250 KB and will not reach 50 KB while staying readable, whatever tool you use.

02Why does the portal want 50 KB?

The cap was set when storage and bandwidth were expensive and has never been revisited. Most of these portals expect one scanned page per slot, a size a bitonal scan hits without effort.

03Should I send a PDF or an image?

Read the slot. Photograph and signature slots want a JPEG at a stated pixel size, and a PDF wrapper there wastes bytes and is often rejected outright. Document slots want the PDF.

04How do I scan in black and white?

Scanner software usually calls it black and white, bitonal, or text mode rather than greyscale. On a phone, the document scanner in most note apps has the same setting, often as a black and white filter.

05What if the file will not reach 50 KB?

You still get the smallest result the tool could produce without wrecking the page, and the result line states the size plainly. Rescanning in black and white is usually the fix, splitting the file is the other one.

06Will the text still be selectable?

Usually, yes. The first two stages leave the text exactly as it was. If the file only fits by rebuilding the pages as pictures, an invisible text layer goes behind them so the words can still be searched.

07Are my files uploaded anywhere?
